General presentation of the project
After decades of accumulating scientific knowledge, the consequences of climate change (CCC) are now being experienced intimately and on a very large scale. The starting point for the FORESEE project is that this experienced dimension of CCC, which remains largely unexplored, is essential for understanding the diversity of responses to CCC, documenting the conflicting social dynamics they give rise to, and proposing ways to achieve sustainable and equitable change.
This project is divided into three axes:
- The objective of axis 1 is to understand the varied responses to the consequences of climate change, by documenting discourses, epistemic obstacles, and the emergence of ecological sensibilities. It comprises several sub-themes: studying lived experiences of the consequences of global warming and how they support future action; social, national, and political contexts; and forward-looking narratives that encourage action.
- Axis 2 (“Actors, organizations, and territories vulnerable to CCC: resistance, adaptation, resilience”) documents the mechanisms of resilience, resistance, and adaptation of territorial organizations, with a particular focus on vulnerable territories and their organisations (involving metropolitan areas, cities, and local authorities), the adaptation trajectories of public and private actors (involving businesses, associations, etc.) and the transformations of territorial ecosystems in the face of CCCs (observing the systemic interactions between these actors).
- Axis 3 aims to rethink the foundations of the social contract by examining the impacts of climate inequalities and injustices on fundamental legal and social concepts. The first sub-axis will identify climate inequalities and how they become norms. Sub-axis 2 will focus on public policy, considering how the perceptions analyzed in the first sub-axis are used by policy actors. The final sub-axis will study climate activism in light of inequality and justice or injustice.
About the SHS AMI
In spring 2024, the French National Research Agency (ANR) launched an “Appel à Manifestation d’Intérêt” (AMI) for “Research programs in the humanities and social sciences” with a budget of €100 million. Following a selection process completed at the end of 2024, six consortia were selected. ForeSee is one of three consortia of which Lyon 3 University is a member, along with DemoCIS and ReligiS.
